The 16 hour intensive program will offer everything you need to know to begin beekeeping. The course is taught by Eliese Watson, Founder of ABC Bees and advocate for urban beekeeping across Canada.

ABC Bees is pleased to offer a Level One Beekeeping Certificate on October 5-6th, 2019 for hobby beekeepers in an urban and rural setting. The 16 hour intensive program will offer everything you need to know to begin beekeeping. The course is taught by Eliese Watson, Founder of ABC Bees and advocate for urban beekeeping across Canada.

Eliese Watson Bio:

Travelling all-over North America teaching and mentoring under beekeepers such as Corwin Bell, Sam Comfort, and Kirk Anderson. Eliese has a wide knowledge of natural beekeeping practices with both Top Bar Hive and Langstroth equipment. Course includes Beekeeping in Western Canada textbook, hand outs, resources, coffee/tea service and light refreshments.

  • Nectar and Pollen Plants
  • To Feed or Not To Feed?Seasonal Management
  • Spring
  • Summer
  • Fall

  • Honey Bee Health
  • Integrated Pest Management

Students will leave the course able to:

  • Describe and explain the biology of the honey bee. 
  • Source the purchasing of honey bees and identify and locate the required equipment to start and sustain a beehive throughout the seasons.
  • Construct a feeding plan that will prevent the starvation of the honey bee and best support bee health and productivity. 
  • Perform basic hive inspections applying the five steps to observe abnormality. 
  • Inspect an beehive in order to assess when an apiary has entered into the spring, summer and fall seasons identifying when the colonies need to be prepared for winter.
  • Complete a management schedule outlining Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies and techniques that will support bee health and productivity throughout all seasons. 
  • Explain when diseases may be present in a colony identifying solutions to remove the disease(s). 
  • Apply integrated pest management strategies throughout the beekeeping season to maintain biosecurity and hive healthy in the apiary. 
  • Understand seasonal flows of nectar and pollen, ecological indicators for identifying when the flow is occurring, clear indicators of dearth, how to map your seasonal expectations of flow and dearth.
