Winter Management Summary

Winter can be a daunting time for all beekeepers, despite experience. Nothing can replace healthy colonies with strong resources and queens. But, as a beekeeper, there are things that you can do to increase their resilience through management. Whether it be through winter wraps, breeding resilient stock, or managing disease and mites. The goal is to keep learning, take good notes, and enjoy observing their natural behaviours in your bee yard. And, if you fail, try again.

Winter Management Key Takeaways

  • When compressing the hive, compress brood to the bottom middle of the hive.
  • Honey bee colonies require 65 – 85 lbs of honey to survive the prairie winter.
  • The easier it is for bees to access winter stores, the greater their defense against starvation.
  • Do not liquid feed when night-time temperatures are below 5°C.
  • Wet bees are dead bees. Allowing access to open air for flight and air circulation is key.
  • If you have harsh winters, keep your bees in a yard where they get full sun. If your winter temperatures commonly go above 5°C mid day, keep your bees where they get 50/50 shade to sun exposure.
