Using an Oxalic Acid Sublimator Wand for Beehive Treatment

Procedure Overview:

The use of an oxalic acid sublimator wand is an effective method for treating beehives to control varroa mites. This process involves sublimating oxalic acid dihydrate crystals to create a vapor that targets the mites. Here’s a breakdown of the steps involved, along with important safety tips:

Preparation:

  • Hive Preparation: Close off the front entrance of the hive with foam or cloth. Place a varroa floor and seal the back of the hive to prevent vapor from escaping.
  • Protective Gear and Equipment: Wear a mask rated for organic acid vapors, goggles, and heat-resistant gloves. Measure 2.25 grams of oxalic acid dihydrate crystals into the provided ceramic bowl.
  • Power Source: Connect the sublimator wand to a suitable power source (battery with an inverter).

 Application:

  • Safety First: Prioritize safety by wearing the required protective gear to prevent exposure to oxalic acid vapors.
  • Position Sublimator: Flip the sublimator wand upside down and press it onto the ceramic bowl, creating an airtight seal.
  •  Start Treatment: Switch on the sublimator and allow it to heat up to the required temperature.
  •  Insert Nozzle: Carefully insert the nozzle of the sublimator into the hive entrance (or back entrance if applicable) to release the vapor.
  •  Treatment Time: Allow the oxalic acid to sublimate according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Post-Treatment

  • Observation: After treatment, observe the varroa mite drop on the sticky board under the screened bottom board to assess treatment effectiveness.
  • Ventilation: Once all hives are treated, unblock upper entrances and allow hives to ventilate for 10-15 minutes before closing them up.

Safety Tips:

  • Always read and understand the product label and material safety data sheet (MSDS) before use.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including acid-resistant gloves, goggles or a face shield, and a properly fitted respirator.

  • Store oxalic acid away from sunlight, in a cool, dry place.

  • Avoid skin, eye, and face contact when handling oxalic acid.

  • Know the protocol for emergencies involving oxalic acid exposure and have the MSDS accessible.

  • Seek advice from local experts or beekeeping associations for region-specific guidelines.

Remember, safety is paramount when using chemicals, especially when dealing with potentially harmful substances like oxalic acid. Follow instructions closely and prioritize the well-being of both yourself and your bees.
